Chile advances as a food exporter

Hand in hand with free trade agreements, food has become more and more space in the Chilean export basket in recent years and now accounts for almost half of the country's non-copper shipments.

According to ProChile, this is one of the main reasons to declare that Chile has become a food power, to which it is added that these products have global reach, and in the case of some destinations, they are the most significant offer.

And in this area, sales in Chile go far beyond typical countries such as the United States, Japan, China or Brazil, and include Thailand, Switzerland, Sri Lanka and even Africa.

«For these products we have a global trade pattern», highlights the director of ProChile, Roberto Paiva. It also highlights that in many countries the Chilean offer is the most relevant. For example, in the European Union, Chile is the main supplier of wines outside the block.

This is repeated in other products and markets such as cherries in China, where they represent 80% of total imports, or the United States, where Chilean blueberries represent 40% of the total supply.

Spotlights in 2016

For this year, the Chilean food offer will have a global focus, although the promotion in Asia will not be neglected, which in 2015 led the ranking of Chilean food exports for the first time, mainly thanks to the exponential growth that China has had, which rose from $ 90 million in 2005 to $ 1.291 million in 2015.

In addition to ChileWeek in China and the USA UU to be held in late August and October, respectively, in April there will be a tour with businessmen to Japan and Korea and in May there will be a fair «Flavors of Chile» in Sweden, in the framework of the official visit that President Bachelet will carry out.
