Chile: New president of the SNA raises water sustainability as one of its lines of work

The board of directors of the Chilean National Agricultural Society (SNA) elected Cristián Allendes Marín as the new president of the entity for the period 2021-2023, who will take over as Ricardo Ariztía de Castro.

The new charges

According to the SNA, Recaredo Ossa Balmaceda was elected as first vice president and Gastón Caminondo Vidal as second vice president.

The rest of the table was made up of Diego Castro Portales, Carolina Cruz Vargas, José Antonio Galilea Vidaurre, Andrés Montero Jaramillo, Jorge Quiroz Castro, José Miguel Stegmeier Schmidlin. The new union directors will be the representatives of Agrollanquihue, Fedeleche, Fedefruta and Vinos de Chile.

Cristian Allendes stated that his work focus will be on four axes: water sustainability, formality of the world of work, agricultural sustainability and native forest, and agri-food power and associativity.

The new scenarios

Allendes pointed out that “the current challenge of the SNA must aim to modernize agricultural thinking, to respond to times of accelerated changes in uncertain environments that characterize the entire world. We must look up and respond to people's current concerns, such as greater inclusion, active care of the environment, the generation of more and better jobs ”.

Cristian Allende emphasized that there are other challenges for the country that concern him, such as security for the agricultural world: “In this regard, La Araucanía is the place that most concerns us due to the absence of a real rule of law. We trust that all authorities of all tendencies will come together to find a definitive solution to a problem that has dragged on for decades and from which violentists and drug traffickers are taking advantage ”, he said.

Allendes stressed that there are many issues that the sector must face, which is why, from his position as the new president of farmers, he will need solid support from those who make up the union.

Along these lines, it will implement "a campaign to attract new partners and organizations linked to agricultural work with the aim of meeting the needs of our sector together". Likewise, he requested support from the board of directors, the council and the 45 unions that make up the SNA during his tenure. "I hope to have the support of all of you, to help the fields of all food producers, their collaborators and the food chain, to be better every day," he concluded.

Entity reactions

Faced with the new appointment, various entities expressed their opinion, such as the Asociación de Viveros de Chile AGV and the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta).

"From the Asociación de Viveros de Chile AGV, we are very satisfied with the election of Cristián Allendes, and from now on we give him all our support and join the objectives that he has set for his management leading the National Society of Agriculture", said the President of Viveros de Chile, Cristián Pichuante.

Sustainability

"From our sector we value that in his roadmap the head of the SNA has put agricultural and water sustainability as a priority, as well as the importance of associativity and formality," said Pichuante. "We will join with enthusiasm to push these emphasis together with him," he emphasized.

Viveros de Chile highlighted Allendes' agricultural experience, being a benchmark in terms of fruit excellence and innovation and also in his leadership career.

Maritrini Lapuente, general manager of Viveros de Chile said that “we are especially happy that Carolina Cruz has joined the board of directors, with whom we have been working and cooperating as a union for years. Carolina is a reference woman for the sector with tremendous capacity and leadership, which I am sure will be a great contribution, knowing how to print her own look at agriculture ”.

“As nurserymen we are also proud because a great representative of our sector was chosen as institutional director. We congratulate Jorge Valenzuela, a member of our board of directors, who in his role as president of Fedefruta will also participate in the board of the SNA ”, highlighted Pichuante.

Desire Fedefruta, Jorge Valenzuela, president of the entity pointed out that "we are aligned with Cristián Allendes, and we join the effort to advance the pillars that he announced for his management, such as modernizing the sector according to the times and current sensitivity , and be attentive to the concerns of citizens such as the environment, access to better jobs, and the inclusion of the rural world and its people in sustainable development”.
