USA: Two new varieties of berries are presented to the public
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) geneticist Chad Finn and his colleagues from the Crop Research Unit in Corvallis, Oregon, have developed two new varieties of "berries" -A blueberry and a blackberry- that have been presented to the public recently.
Baby Blues, a cultivar launched in cooperation with the Agricultural Experiment Station of Oregon State University and the Agricultural Research Center of Washington State University, is a new blueberry presented on the centenary of the arrival of the first cultivated blueberry on the market .
«Baby Blues is a vigorous, high-yielding, small-fruited, machine-harvestable Highbush blueberry that has outstanding fruit quality. It adapts well to processing markets that require small fruits,” explains Finn. “Baby Blues should offer growers and processors an alternative to the low-yielding Rubel highbush blueberry and can thrive in milder areas where northern highbush blueberries are grown.”.
Finn has also developed a new default called Columbia Giant. This climbing blackberry cultivator without climbing thorns comes from the same breeding program as the Baby Blues and has also been presented in cooperation with the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Oregon State University.
