Said Andy Xie of Shanghai Junli International Trading Co., Ltd. (China)

«The lack of arrivals is making Peruvian blueberries very expensive at the moment»

The new season of Peruvian blueberries has been available on the Chinese market since late July, but arrival volumes are still low. Andy Xie from Shanghai Junli International Trading Co., Ltd. shared his impressions on the current situation of Peruvian blueberries.

“Due to a decline in Peruvian blueberry production last season, local growers delayed pruning and harvesting. In addition, this year’s weather has further impacted production, resulting in significant delays and few early arrivals.”

Despite the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, Andy notes that the festive atmosphere has not significantly influenced the blueberry market, mainly due to the shortage of supply.

“The low volume of arrivals, combined with unsaturated market demand and shortages in various channels and secondary wholesale markets, has driven blueberry prices to an exceptionally high level, with no clear trend at the moment,” Andy explains.

Production is expected to peak this season around week 44, with arrivals to the domestic market concentrated in mid- to late November.

This increase in arrivals could put pressure on sales in the market.

As for current shipments, Andy mentioned that the main varieties arriving now are Sekoya, Emerald and Ventura. Size-wise, traditional varieties are mostly 16mm or larger, while Sekoya is 18mm or larger. “The overall quality is stable and has improved compared to last year,” he says.

Regarding market trends, Andy notes: “Demand for fresh blueberries in China has increased significantly, spurred by domestic blueberries from Yunnan, while current supplies remain limited.

In addition, many companies are investing heavily in research and development of new blueberry varieties due to the strong market benefits, which translates into positive growth of the blueberry sector.

Peruvian blueberries are a key product for Junli Trading this season, and the company is actively promoting them. “We are collaborating with major suppliers to boost sales on online platforms such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu, along with related brand promotion initiatives.”

Shanghai Junli Trading's main product categories include cherries, blueberries, plums, apples, durians and dragon fruit, with a focus on both market stalls and e-commerce channels.
