Andalusian companies that export to the United Kingdom increase 7,8% until September

Productive investment from United Kingdom destined for the community has tripled in the first half of 2020 and the number of Andalusian companies that export to the British territory has increased by 7,8% year-on-year until September. These are some of the main conclusions that emerge from the Monitoring Report of the Brexit in the Andalusian economy presented to the Governing Council by the Minister of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Junta de Andalucía, Rogelio Velasco.

According to the report prepared by the Ministry of Economic Transformation, until September, exports of agri-food products (8,3% year-on-year) have been positive, especially blueberries, olive oil and tomatoes. Faced with this, sales of energy products have dropped notably (43,9%), in a situation of falling oil prices on international markets (37% year-on-year between January and September). Semi-manufactures also fell (29,7%), especially cement, concrete or artificial stone; and sales of the automobile sector (39,9%), in particular gearboxes and their parts.

The health and economic crisis of Covid-19 has caused intense and generalized falls in GDP around the world, especially in the second quarter of the year, due to restrictions on mobility and the closure of activities that it has implied. According to the report, in the European Union GDP is has decreased by 7% year-on-year between January and September, although the decline suffered in the United Kingdom has been even greater, of 11%. This economic contraction and the stoppage of the productive sectors have been transferred to economic and commercial relations with Andalusia, with decreases in the
reception of tourists and in exports.

In this unfavorable context, from January to June 2020, the productive investment in Andalusia made by the United Kingdom has multiplied by three, reaching the 18,3 million, in a context of sharp decline (23,7%) of foreign capital as a whole, which registered a volume of 252,7 million in that period. In 2019, business projects originating in the British territory that landed in the region amounted to 36,9 million, an amount that represents an increase of 84% compared to the 20,1 million recorded in 2016, the year in which it was produced. the referendum on leaving the EU. In the 2016-2019 period, global foreign investment in the community also grew widely, by 81%, from 471,2 to 853 million.

The number of Andalusian firms that sell to the British territory has increased by 7,8% year-on-year until September to stand at 1.087 companies. This behavior contrasts with the significant reduction of -10,6% applied to the group of companies in the region that export to the world, which stood at 18.459. At the end of 2019, the business fabric with an export vocation to the United Kingdom was established in 1.116.

Between 2016 and 2019, the number of Andalusian exporting companies to the British Isles fell slightly (0,4%) -from 1.121 to 1.116-, in a context of a strong increase of 22,8% of the total number of exporting firms, which goes from 20.827 at 25.576.
