Mexico: Berries exceed USD 1.200 million in exports and allied with Dutch
In Michoacán, Mexico, the berry sector has grown exponentially. In 2006, the value of exports of this crop amounted to around USD 450 million and, currently, they exceed USD 1.200 million, according to the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of the Aztec country, SAGARPA .
Within the framework of this growth, SAGARPA's Undersecretary of Food and Competitiveness, Ricardo Aguilar Castillo, participated in the inauguration of the Koppert Development Institute (KDI), the first Center for Innovation and Knowledge Transfer in Berry Cultivation promoted by Dutch investors in Mexico. This entity is characterized, among other things, by having the highest production value in the country, added to the quality of its products. This is the importance of linking Michoacan producers with Dutch importers and the European Union.
The KDI is a center for research, technological development and transmission of knowledge specialized in crops known as berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries) in Mexico. The national production of this product contributes 7,9% to the world volume of these crops, with which Mexico has become an excellent producer and exporter of berries and ranks fourth in world production, with the United States and Europe being the main ones export markets.
The consumption of annual world berries per capita has grown interestingly, with an increase of 16,5% per year and will continue with a similar growth until the 2020.
