Michoacán places Mexico as the fourth largest producer of berries

Michoacán places our country as the fourth largest producer of berries, contributing more than 90% of blackberry production and more than 60% of strawberry production in the country; at the national level 248 thousand 512 tons of blackberry are produced and our entity contributes 238 thousand 832 tons of the fruit.

Michoacán produces more than 341 thousand 130 tons of strawberry while the state that is closest to it is Baja California with 70 thousand tons; In total the country produces 468 thousand tons of fruit.

The production of raspberry and blueberry in Michoacán, is ranked second nationally with an annual production of more than 17 thousand and 6 thousand tons, respectively. The production of raspberry and blueberry have grown in the last four years an 200%; so in a few years Michoacán will also be a leader in the production of these fruits.

Berries are in great demand in the US market and also in Europe and thanks to good agricultural practices in terms of health and safety applied by Michoacan producers, this fruit is exported more and more in more quantities. The main countries to which it is exported are: Chile, Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Worldwide there are six fruits that stand out as berries, among them: blueberry, cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, currant currant (ribes ribrum) and blackberry (blakberry), these six, four are those that represent the highest percentage of production in the entity.

Of these crops which are located first in both production volume and production value are the strawberry with a cultivated area of ​​more than 7 thousand 576 hectares, and are close to 33 municipalities that are dedicated to the cultivation of this fruit, among which stand out: Zamora with 104 thousand 496 tons in a cultivated area of ​​one thousand 870 hectares.

Tangancícuaro produces more than 57 thousand 838 tons in a cultivated area of ​​979 hectares; Jacona with 39 thousand 349 tons and a cultivated area of ​​707 hectares; Ixtlán with 34 thousand 913 tons in a cultivated area of ​​643 hectares, just to mention a few.

The blackberry is located in the first place, both in production and value of production, with 238 thousand 832 tons in a cultivated area of ​​12 thousand 390 tons, and the fruit is grown in 26 municipalities; Los Reyes stands out with a production of more than 120 thousand tons, in a cultivated area of ​​5 thousand 164 hectares.

The municipality of Peribán produces 49 thousand 859 tons, in a cultivated area of ​​2 thousand 167 hectares; Tacámbaro contributes 10 thousand 650 tons, which are obtained in an area of ​​more than one thousand hectares.

The berries or strawberries are known for their small size, in addition to their peculiar colors and an unparalleled flavor. Its contribution of vitamins helps for health, as well as it is a great source of antioxidants.
