Small producers contribute more than 20% of blueberry exports from Peru

The former president of Sierra y Selva Exportadora, Alfonso Velásquez, said

Of the 134 thousand tons of fresh blueberries exported by Peru during 2019, more than 20% comes from small farmers with between 1 and 10 hectares.

This was stated by the former president of Sierra and Selva Exportadora, Alfonso Velásquez Tuesta, who highlighted the participation of the small, medium and large national farmer in the export boom of this berry.

He pointed out that the areas of blueberries belonging to small producers are mainly located in Lima (Cañete) and Áncash (Huaraz, Caraz).

In this regard, he recalled that in 2011 the government emphasized the opportunity of blueberry cultivation (launched the Peru Berries program) thinking especially about the small and medium farmer and the assurance that the advancement and promotion of the new areas would also include the small agricultural owner

“When the Government, through Sierra and Selva Exportadora, promoted the blueberry, it applied public policies for the benefit of family farming so that it could participate in this exporting wave, betting on this new crop for the country. The results have proved right, ”he replaced.
