Blueberries seminars in Peru will address solutions to climate challenges

They will be focused on achieving a good diagnosis of what happened in the Peruvian season, with the aim of finding tools or actions that mean solutions and better face these challenges in the future.

The Peruvian blueberry season became more complex as a result of the effects of the El Niño, causing a very noticeable shortage of fruit in the international market. The temperature increases associated with the arrival of the meteorological phenomenon affected the physiological aspect of the plants, delaying their flowering, reducing their yield in some cases, or slowing down fruit production in others.

Season under evaluation

The climate effect had different intensities and consequences for Peruvian producers, depending on the responses, the different management, the regions, the varieties and other related factors.

It was a season that is still being evaluated and there is no single answer to diagnose the scope of how much corresponds to the climatic factor and how much to the human factor. However, there is evidence that new plant genetics helped face this challenge and will probably be the ones that will be called upon to overcome it in the future.

In this context, the International Blueberry Seminars that will be held in Peru this year will mainly address aspects related to the plants, their care, management, the applications that have proven to be effective and necessary, and the wide spectrum of new genetics that are available to producers.

Lima, in March

El International Blueberry Seminar Lima, which will take place on March 20 and 21, will begin with a Round Table where Proarándanos will participate together with Fernando Cilloniz and Ricardo Polis to analyze the political and economic reality of the blueberry industry in Peru and the world.

Different specialists will address the physiological aspects of plants and the responses that must be implemented in terms of management, applications and genetic development in a context of climate change and its consequences, in addition to other factors related to the industry, such as good management, arrival, knowledge of new technologies and marketing, among others.

Trujillo, in July

In the case of International Blueberry Seminar Trujillo, on July 10 and 11, will be complementary to Lima in the main aspects that have to do with solutions or tools to face future crises derived from climate and its variants, delving into the market for cutting-edge plant genetics, because it has been shown that it is a variant that can be the solution to many of the industry's needs, not only in terms of quality, firmness, yield or organoleptic qualities of the fruit, but also its survival in threatening climatic scenarios.

Solutions for a leading industry

The two International Blueberry Seminars that will be held in Peru in 2024 will be focused on achieving a good diagnosis of what happened in the Peruvian season, with the aim of finding tools or actions that mean solutions and better face these challenges in the future, since that We are talking about an industry that in recent years has been showing growth unattainable by the competition, positioning itself as the main exporter of blueberries in the world., with volumes over 300 thousand tons of fresh blueberries placed in different markets.
