The 2024/2025 campaign of the Peruvian blueberry industry is continuing over time and has managed to flatten the curve of its supply in the international market, due to the performance of its new varieties and special agronomic management.

The projections for the Peruvian industry for this season place it once again in the absolute leadership position of the global export industry, with a volume that will greatly exceed 300 thousand tons and with better quality fruit, for which the market not only rewards it with its preference, but also with the return values.

Expectation for success

Interest in the Peruvian industry and the different aspects related to its growth has become widespread and extends to producers, specialists and agricultural entrepreneurs from the different producing and exporting countries that participate in the global blueberry industry, so together with important leaders of the global industry they will travel to Lima this 12 and 13 March, on the occasion of the XXXIV International Blueberry Seminar at the Lima Convention Center.

This global blueberry industry gathering will begin on March 10 with a technical tour of the fields that Family Farms Peru maintains in Pisco, south of Lima, where it produces different MBO varieties on 600 hectares on the inert dunes of the Peruvian desert, becoming a success story and positioning itself as the largest blueberry field in southern Peru.

Extraordinary crop

It will be a technical tour of great interest for researchers, specialists and all those who attend this field visit, as they will be able to learn about the behavior of the crop, management strategies and how, attended by a comprehensive team of professionals, it can adapt to extreme soil and climate conditions and produce fruit of excellent quality, both in size and flavor, and also, with high productivity rates.

Complete programming

The March Seminar in Lima will address the main topics of interest to the Peruvian and international blueberry growing industry and will be started by Luis Miguel Vegas, Executive Manager of Proarándanos, who will speak about the “Blueberry industry in Peru: production, marketing and genetics” and then continue with an interesting panel discussion, in which Mr. Fernando Cilloniz, an important Peruvian businessman, Miguel Bentín, President of Proarándanos and Gabriel Amaro, President of AGAP will participate, who will analyze “The blueberry industry, current status, strategies and trends”.

Data and Perspectives

The first day will also feature an interesting analysis of data from recent seasons, weekly prices, production curves and Peru's position in the global blueberry market, and a focus on the quality and condition of the latest Peruvian blueberry season and competing countries.

Irrigation, substrates and plant nutrition

Continuing with the first day, Dr. María del Carmen Salas, whose academic and research activity has focused on hydroponics and soilless cultivation techniques, with special emphasis on water management and fertigation, and the North American researcher David Bryla will present topics of great relevance to the Peruvian industry regarding the characterization of substrates and recommendations for their use in blueberries and the use of irrigation technologies and methods in substrates.

Conversation panel

The first day will end with a panel discussion in which Dr. Walter Apaza from the Agrarian University of La Molina, Juan Valdivia, Manager of Agricultural Operations for Blueberries from the Danper company, Luis Rodríguez, Operations Manager for the Hass Peru company, and Gonzalo Carlazara, Business Unit Manager for Agrovision – Peru, will participate. Various topics of interest will be discussed, including production challenges by production area, phytosanitary control strategies, variety evaluation, market opportunities, among others.

Fight stress

The second day of the meeting begins with Prometeo Sánchez, speaking on “Managing climate stress to improve health, productivity and quality in blueberries”. It continues with the presentations: “Use of phytoregulators in blueberries: myths and realities” and “Bioregulators in blueberries: strategies to deal with climate stress”.

Integrated management

The meeting closes with a panel discussion led by researcher Jorge Retamales and panelists Juan Hirzel, David Bryla and Daniel Díaz, who will address the topic: “Importance of integrated agronomic management: light, plant nutrition and biostimulation in blueberries.”

Clearly, the Lima meeting in March will be the most important event for the international blueberry industry in 2025, a year that begins full of good news and great challenges at the same time, because demand for blueberry consumption is indeed maintained and growing in the international market, but the threat of increased tariffs and protectionism looms over the Latin American export industry.

This will be an opportunity for industry leaders to analyze, discuss and design strategies to face a seemingly uncertain year, although the global blueberry industry has consolidated, placing the fruit in the human diet and increasing in quality and prestige in the market, so continuing along the path of good management will allow us to overcome these and any other obstacles that may be faced.
