Agrovision projects historic record in blueberry production
Results are due to an intensive planting strategy with a focus on efficiency and sustained growth.
Agrovision Perú, a premium agro-exporting company for fruits and vegetables, has more than 4.100 hectares in Olmos (Lambayeque), of which more than half is used for blueberry production. Thus, they have more than 2,200 hectares of varieties such as Sekoya Pop, Sekoya Beauty and BiancaBlue.
According to Felipe Venegas, the company's Services and Development Manager, the current campaign will reach a historic record.
“After 2022 we registered 18,000 tons of blueberries, but last year there was a drop to less than 14,000. However, the current campaign is going well. We are harvesting between 70 and 80 tons per hectare per day and we expect to have a production of 33,000 tons of blueberries,” he said.
In the medium term, the company is considering planting blueberry varieties that will allow them to take advantage of the boom.
Thus, Agrovision's path has been focusing on blueberries of new genetics, with greater climate resilience and increasingly attractive to international markets.
Other crops
According to Venegas, Agrovision has had the goal of growing quickly with the idea that every hectare pays for itself, so they do not leave any free areas. “That led us to have a very aggressive planting program. In these 10 years we have managed to have 100% of the fields planted,” he said.
In contrast to the growth of the blueberry area, the table grape area has been shrinking in recent years. In this regard, Venegas informed the Red Agrícola portal that they have eliminated some varieties that did not adapt to the climate and did not have good commercial acceptance. Currently, they have 120 ha. of Sweet Globe and Jack's Salute plantations.
In addition, they have 120 hectares of avocado trees, which also predicts a good campaign, due to the climate and everything seems to indicate that they will return to yields of 18 tons per hectare, after suffering a drop to 5 t/ha in 2023.
