An alliance between a Peruvian nursery and a Chilean firm seeks to expand the genetic and technological offerings for plant propagation.

The Vineyards Nursery, a company with more than three decades of experience in Peru, has recently signed a strategic alliance with the Chilean firm SynergiaBIO, specializing in plant biotechnology. The agreement aims to strengthen local production of finished plants, including in its offering species of berries, with high standards of genetic and phytosanitary quality.

"The alliance will allow for local production of species like blueberries, incorporating cutting-edge technologies. In nurseries, success relies on three pillars: timeliness, quality, and plant health. The goal for the first year is to produce 2,3 million plants, with a projection of sustained growth," he emphasizes. John Rojo Hernandez, manager of the Los Viñedos Nursery.

Vivero Los Viñedos has sublicenses to propagate plants from various genetic companies, such as Bloom Fresh, Sun World, Itum, and others. "The nursery is the channel that connects the genetic companies with the farmers. Without us, there would be no way to channel these patented plants," he explains.

«On its way to a more professionalized operation, the company has incorporated various technologies: propagation vitro "Meristems, technical greenhouse management, automated irrigation systems, germination chambers, and plant training adapted to each agroclimatic zone. This is a business of fine details. From the substrate to drip irrigation, everything influences the final quality of the plant," says Rojo.

In recent years, the nursery has expanded its portfolio beyond grapevines, once again venturing into vegetables and promoting fruit trees such as avocados, lemons, pomegranates, and olives. "We're no longer just vineyards. Today we offer a broad and diversified portfolio for Peruvian agricultural exporters," he adds.

Regarding market trends, Rojo highlights the tree Blueberry: "In two years we went from 200 to 400 million kilos, thanks to genetics that exceed 28 tons per hectare and its cultivation in substrates, which allows it to be planted even in stony soils."

"We continue to automate processes and adapt technologies to improve production. Our motto is 'your success is our success.' If the farmer does well, so does the nursery. That's our guiding principle," Rojo concludes.
