Cranberries: X-ray of the crop whose production grows 206% annually in Peru

The main destination markets for the blueberry are the United States, the Netherlands, England, China and Spain, according to the Minagri.

La blueberry production in the Peru grew at an average annual rate of 206% between the 2012 to the 2018. Only last year, the production of this fruit registered more than 89,700 tons, being the most producing regions of the country La Libertad and Lambayeque .

El Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation ( Minagri) reported that the national production of cranberry arrived last year at the 89,735 tons , that represented a greater volume in 71.6% with respect to similar period of the 2017.

According to data from the Directorate General for Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies of the Minagri, the regions that experienced a rise were La Libertad (78.4%) and Lambayeque (18.2%).

Regarding the performance indices by regions registered to 2018, La Libertad stands out, with 16.8 tons / hectare, higher than the national average (15.3 tons / hectare), following in order of importance, Lambayeque (15 tons / hectare), Ica (8.2 tons / hectare), Lima (4.5 tons / hectare) and Ancash (4.1 tons / hectare).

The installed area of ​​blueberry in the 2017-2018 agricultural campaign was 7,884 hectares, the largest area reached in La Libertad and Lambayeque.

Robust exports

On the other hand, At the end of the 2018 year, 78,700 tons of blueberry were exported , which meant an increase of 83% compared to 2017, year in which 43 was exported thousands of tons.

So also its average growth between 2012 and 2018 meant 247% more, being one of the main products of the agro-export basket.

With respect to its export FOB value, last year it increased by 63% compared to the 2017 year (when it reached US $ 361 million). Further, Cranberry exports went from US $ 0.4 million exported obtained in the 2012 year to the US $ 589.9 million exported in the 2018.

The main destination markets for fresh Peruvian blueberries during the past year, United States , country that acquired the 54% of the total, followed by the Netherlands 21%, England 9%, China 6% and Spain 4%.

The main blueberry exporting countries in the world are Chile, which concentrates 20% of the total, followed by Canada (19%), Spain (11%), Peru (10%), United States (9%), Holland (6) %), Argentina (4%), Morocco (4%) and Mexico (3%), among other nations.

The production of blueberries in the world to the year 2017 had been led by North America (United States, Canada and Mexico) with the 75% of the planted area of ​​this crop.

At the level of South America, the planted area of ​​the crop represents the 15% and is led by Chile with 15,800 hectares, followed by Peru and Argentina (FAOSTAT).
