Blue as part of Peru's sustainable agriculture

Peru has become the world's leading blueberry exporter, and that's no coincidence. It's been growing for several years, and as a result, the blueberry has become one of the country's emblems.

The first day of XXXVII International Seminar de Blueberries Consulting, the general manager of Pro-blueberries, louis miguel vegas, commented that thanks to the blueberry industry, there are now more formal jobs in rural areas, even improving their quality of life.

But it's also important to highlight a term that has become more common over the years: sustainable agriculture.

What do we call sustainable agriculture? It sounds redundant considering that agriculture is one of Peru's most important activities, but why is it "sustainable"?

And it's called sustainable because agricultural activity aims to satisfy basic needs, primarily food, without compromising future generations.

That is, it has a more comprehensive approach, because it doesn't just focus on crop planting, but also takes into account environmental, economic, and social factors.

They take into account the proper use of water and energy, with the aim of reducing environmental impact. They also regulate dependence on the use of synthetic fertilizers.

Also other factors such as crop diversification, animal welfare and adaptation to climate change.

We could go into much more detail, but it's also important to report on how beneficial it is because it helps preserve resources (reducing the use of non-renewable resources), sustainable practices (recycling energy and nutrients), and takes advantage of the landscape (allowing for more and higher-quality production, and agricultural practices can enhance this planning).

Blueberry: the high-value industry

For his part, the commercial manager of Daniel Málaga de Naturagro, highlighted that due to the boom and the “demand” of blueberries, producers require “products with high technical value.”

“Blueberries are such a demanding crop, and now that there are several companies with plants with different genetics that are trying to get the highest yield per hectare from each type of crop, they demand highly technical solutions.”

Per campaign, Pro Arándanos emphasized that export production growth is increasing by nearly 30% each season; Looking ahead, the limit and ceiling are still unknown.

The blueberry industry is experiencing a boom and aims to continue to be a driving force behind an economic cycle in which the beautiful blue of the blueberry has become the color of hope for many families.
