Morocco, the undisputed leader in fruit and vegetables for Spain, reached €672 million in the first four months of the year.

Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables from Morocco grew by 28% in the first four months of the year, reaching €672 million. This increase strengthens Morocco's position as the main supplier to the Spanish market in this sector, surpassing other countries and recording the highest year-over-year growth.

The North African country now accounts for 33% of the total fresh fruit and vegetables imported by Spain in the first four months of the year, which amounted to €2.006 billion, 11% more than in the same period in 2024.

Sustained upward trend

This increase is not new, as the figures maintain the upward trend seen in previous periods. Over the past five years, fruit and vegetable purchases from Morocco increased by 56% in the first four months of the year, rising from €432 million in 2021 to €672 million today.

In terms of volume, Moroccan imports also experienced strong growth of 26% compared to the first four months of 2024, totaling 254.385 tons. Over the past five years, the volume of fresh fruit and vegetable purchases from Morocco has increased by 13%.

Concerns of Spanish farmers

Spanish farmers' associations attribute this continued growth to what they consider to be ineffective implementation of the Agreement between the European Union and Morocco. They argue that this situation could be fostering unfair competition from Morocco in the Spanish market.

The Moroccan paradox: Agricultural imports and the position of VOX

Morocco has established itself as a key supplier of fruits and vegetables to Spain, with import figures that continue to grow and are visible on the shelves of any supermarket. However, this economic reality, which favors large Spanish food companies, contrasts sharply with the rhetoric of parties like VOX. While this political party is calling for the expulsion of North African migrants, it appears to be adopting a low profile in the face of the impact that the volume of these Moroccan agricultural imports has on Spanish farmers, who denounce the direct harm to their sector.
