Michoacán, second national producer of cranberry

During the last five years the production of blueberry grew 300% in Michoacán, which has more than 614 hectares cultivated -mostly through the protected agriculture system-, of which last year 6 thousand 595 tons were obtained, said the owner of the Rural Development Secretariat and Agroalimentary (Sedrua), Francisco Huergo Maurin.

He explained that nine Michoacan municipalities stand out in the production of cranberry, being the first three Tangancícuaro, with 271 hectares cultivated of which last year 3 thousand 683 tons were obtained; Salvador Escalante, with a thousand 302 tons; and Los Reyes, with 716.

According to the statistical census, Michoacán has 331 hectares of blueberry cultivated under macro tunnel and 217 hectares with shade mesh; 24 of them stand out for being an organic crop, that is, they do not use any type of chemical input.

Last year, at the national level, there was a production of 29 thousand 66 tons, and Michoacán stood out as the second place with a production higher than the 6 thousand 595 tons harvested in 614 hectares, only below Jalisco, which produced 13 thousand 353 tons.

Worldwide, the main producer is the United States, with 96 percent of production. In Europe approximately 4 percent is produced, while the rest of the continents do not have outstanding productions.

In the FAO statistical databases, only six blueberry producing countries appear: the main one is the United States, followed by Canada, Latvia and Mexico.

Among the exporting countries, the first is the United States, followed by Chile. The rest of countries barely exports appreciable amounts.
