Onubafruit, world pioneers in marketing red fruits certified in nitrate footprint

This is a certification, under which there are already 90 hectares of blueberries from one of Onubafruit's member cooperatives, which guarantees a controlled and efficient contribution of nitrogen fertilizers to the crop, as well as supervision of its transfer to groundwater.

onubafruit, European leader in the production and marketing of berries, takes another step towards real sustainability, and becomes the first entity in the world to market berries with nitrate footprint certificates, through its partners. SCA Costa de Huelva.

Specifically, there are more than 90 hectares of blueberries that have been certified by this innovative management model, based on precision agriculture, which allows a controlled and efficient contribution of nitrogen fertilizers to the crop.

Onubafruit now has 90 hectares under the Nitrate Footprint seal

The nitrate footprint certificate goes beyond that of the carbon footprint, since it seeks to make less use of nitrogen fertilizers, at the same time improving the growth of the crop and the groundwater quality.

Onubafruit, monitoring groundwater

Under this management model, surveillance is established to detect a possible migration of nitrogen fertilizers at depth, avoiding alteration of the chemical state of the aquifers. This project is, therefore, an example of preserving the good environmental status of underground water bodies.

This management model and experience has been included in the Eip-Agro Focus Group "Digital tools for sustainable nutrient management", a European document of international validation in which knowledge about good practices in a specific field is compiled and summarized, listing both problems as opportunities.

This is thus a world-leading project, which once again puts on the table the entrepreneurial nature of this sector, and especially of onubafruit and its member cooperatives.
