Blueberry production between January-April grew by 105% due to increased market demand
Between January-April of this year, the national production of blueberries amounted to 24.670 tons, showing a growth of 105% compared to the same period last year when it reached the 12.027 tons.
This was indicated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), who noted that the average annual yield for 2018 was 15.7 tons per hectare, the best yields for the 2018 year were in the La Libertad region, with 17.1 t / ha , followed by Lambayeque (15 t / ha), Ica (9.1 t / ha), Ancash (6 t / ha) and Lima (4.6 t / ha).
The average price in January-April of the present year amounted to S / 8.60 per kilogram, higher in 27% with respect to the same period of 2018 (S / 6.76 per kilogram).
On the other hand, in terms of exports of fresh blueberries, only in the period January-May of this year, an FOB value of US $ 84 million would have been reached, which would mean an increase of 73% compared to the US $ 50 million registered during the same period of 2018.
Exports and markets
Within the Peruvian agro-export basket, this product would occupy the fourth position in the ranking so far in the year 2019.
It should be remembered that at the end of the 2018 year, the main destination markets for fresh blueberries were: the United States (52%), the Netherlands (22%) and England (10%), which together would capture the 84,5% of the total value exported.
Meanwhile, the main destination markets of the cranberry so far this year were: the United States, the Netherlands and England, countries that together would capture the 93,6% of the total value exported.
The main blueberry exporting country in the world at the end of 2018 was Chile, concentrating 21% of the total exported, followed by Peru that captured 17%, then there are Spain and the Netherlands, each with 12% of the total, followed of the United States, which participates 7%, among the main
