Ronald Bown, president of ASOEX: "It is not difficult to define the effects that the implementation of technology, innovation and artificial intelligence in the sector can produce"

During the first day of the Technology and Innovation Fair, a forum was held on the technological challenges of the agricultural industry. The event was opened by the Minister of Agriculture and Science and Technology.

In the third Hortifrut 2019 Technology and Innovation Fair that is being held at the Espacio Riesco Convention Center, the forum "Technological and commercial challenges of the agricultural industry" was held on the opening day, where the president of the Asoex, Ronald Bown, participated; the former president of the CPC, Rafael Guilisasti; the founder of Empresas Sútil, Juan Sútil and the founding partner of Exportadora Prize,

The event also had the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker Prieto and the Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Andrés Couve, who in his speech stressed the importance of the introduction of technology and innovation in the agricultural sector.

In this sense, in the inaugural speech of Minister Antonio Walker, said that "every day is more important how to produce, we need to have sustainable and sustainable agriculture, for that what we have to do is have an agriculture that respects the environment, that respects people, because this concept is increasingly important. We leave a trace of water, carbon, a social footprint, then we have to be sustainable agriculture. Today we have a carbon neutral agriculture and the great goal of the Government is to be a carbon neutral country in the 2.050. "

For its part, the Minister of Science and Technology, Andrés Couve, said that "agriculture is a sector that wants to show the world as a modern industry, with sustainable production and quality products." This requires that "scientific knowledge must be used for the wellbeing of the country with a vision that incorporates sustainable development". In the same way, he assured that the Ministry should be able to articulate in its DNA the incorporation of science, technology and innovation in various sectors, such as agriculture. "We have been commissioned to form a ministry to protect a task that we often do not know how it happens. We have to provide the conditions to ensure that this happens. We have to worry about the future and anticipate it by identifying our comparative advantages and our natural laboratories, "he concluded.

Meanwhile, after the forum in which he participated, the President of the Asoex, Ronald Bown, said that the technological challenges of the fruit sector "are tremendously complex and interesting, but not difficult to define from the point of view of what effects can produce the implementation of technology, innovation and artificial intelligence in the sector. Fundamentally due to the fact that the automation of many of the processes we carry out, will mean at least a period of no more than 10 years, a brutal change in the workforce. In our opinion, at least half of the current workforce is not going to be necessary in this period and that means from many points of view, investment in training and in finding formulas so that these people have other types of activities. Obviously, it is going to create a complex situation that we have to foresee from now ".

Likewise, Bown reflected on what should be done and calls on the authorities to project the future of the country. “The speed of changes in the world and in this country must be accompanied by a change in the institutional framework. To think that the institutional framework of 30 years ago is going to help us to address these challenges is a serious mistake. The speed with which structural changes are made in the country, with which the legislation accompanies these changes, is absolutely different from what is required for the country to project itself in the future ”.
