Baja California: Baja California berries feed the United States

Baja California produces 134 thousand tons of these strawberries per year, according to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development

Tijuana Baja California. Baja California is the third producer of berries nationwide, But 90 percent of its production ends at US tables.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), the entity produces 134 thousand 576.5 tons of berries per year. These strawberries include the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. Only one tenth is destined for regional and national consumption and the rest is exported to the neighboring country.

In 2019, the production of berries had an increase of 20 percent in relation to 2018, which makes Baja California one of the districts of greater agricultural development in Mexico.

The Rural Development District 01 Ensenada - conformed by Ensenada, the San Quintín Valley and Eréndira - registered a harvest of 2 thousand 885 hectares, surpassing productions of important crops for the region such as tomato and cucumber, said Fernando Felipe Sánchez Galicia, agricultural subdelegate of Baja California.

The highest production was obtained with the cultivation of the strawberry, which was 116 thousand 451.0 tons, with the harvest of 920 hectares. The greater production of this strawberry (98 thousand 282 tons) sprouted in agricultural farms cultivated in the open air mode.

Meanwhile, the organic planting obtained four thousand tons and the harvest in shade mesh structures produced 14 thousand 169 tons of this delicious fruit.

In second place are raspberries with a production of 14 thousand 179.1 tons and the harvest of 649 hectares. In the open, 12 tons were produced and 150.1 hectares were harvested. On the other hand, 535.0 tons were produced organically with the harvest of 2 hectares.

Blueberries occupy third place. From this strawberry a production of 3 thousand 188.4 tons was achieved in a harvested area of ​​260 hectares. In this crop also the open pit plantings stand out with the harvest of 191 hectares and a production of 2 thousand 635 tons of the fruit. It is followed by the shade mesh cover with 57 hectares harvested and a production of 399 tons.

In Baja California there are 51 strawberry producers, 11 raspberries, 5 blueberries and 3 blackberries; most of them are located in the agricultural areas of San Quintín and Colonia Vicente Guerrero, belonging to the municipality of Ensenada.
