Huelva province increases its volume of sales and exports of blueberries and raspberries

Andalusian exports increase their value by 10,3% and 7% with respect to 2017. Almost all of these productions, which have also increased the volume of sales, are directed to markets of countries of the European Union.

Exports of blueberries and raspberries from Andalusia in 2018 their value has been increased by 10,3% and 7,6% with respect to 2017, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development. In the first case, the 257,89 million euros have been reached, while in raspberry it has been sold abroad for the value of 344,4 million euros. Almost all of these productions, which have also increased the volume of exports to the 45,58 million kilos of blueberries (one 20,3% more than in 2017) and the 44,85 million kilos of raspberries (almost an 7,6% more), are directed to the European Union. The Germanic country is the main destination of the Andalusian blueberries, since in the last campaign it received the 37,9% of exports, while the United Kingdom absorbed most of the raspberries (33,4%).

In terms of production data, both crops, which are concentrated almost entirely in the province of Huelva, have experienced an increase over last year. Thus, in 2018 42.522 tons of blueberries have been obtained compared to the 34.077 of 2017 and an area of ​​3.410 hectares, slightly higher than the 2.983 of the previous year. For its part, the production of raspberries has increased from 42.866 tons to 43.794 tons and from 2.363 to 2.433 hectares.

Spain is the main producer of blueberry of the European Union and the second of raspberries, with Andalusia as the first producing region of both crops nationwide. In 2017, the Andalusian production of blueberry represented the 96,3% of the production of Spain and the 39,4% of the community. The harvest of this seasonal crop takes place between the months of February and June, but around three quarters of the production is concentrated in the months of April and May.

For its part, the raspberry offer takes place throughout most of the year, thanks to the overlap of the different varieties implanted, but it is between October and June of the following year when seasonal fruit is considered. The maximum volume of production is obtained between March and May. Last year Andalusia contributed the 98,5% of the Spanish production of raspberry, a crop that is in expansion and that in the last six years has increased an 180% its planted area.

The Andalusian offer of both products is very concentrated in large cooperative companies that make a high investment in the sector in R & D.
