Heat wave hits Morocco: Bioregulators, an alternative to save crops

The international researcher, Daniel Diaz, agricultural engineer and doctor in Plant Physiology of Fruit Trees in the Michigan State University, noted that one of the strategies to combat the effects of high temperatures is the use of bioregulators. Díaz participated in the month of July International Blueberries Seminar Trujillo 2025, held in Peru, where he addressed the topic of heat stress in blueberries and the use of bioregulators to combat this contingency.

Heat stress in blueberries: the Peruvian experience

“In 2023, there was an extreme heat wave in the region (Peru) that affected blueberries in particular. It was one of the first massive examples I saw of how climate change can affect an entire industry, and with a very specific effect. Within this framework, there are many tools we can use, such as bioregulators, to take care of nutrition, water, sanitation, etc.,” Díaz said in an interview for Blueberries Consulting.

Díaz emphasized that the use of bioregulators and hormonal compounds can help minimize the effects of high temperatures on crops, which requires thorough control. "For heat, the type of hormone used and how often is important to achieve a targeted, efficient, and consistent effect. But other aspects shouldn't be neglected either, because it's part of a comprehensive system," he maintained.

It should be noted that excessive heat can cause significant damage to plant and fruit development, resulting in dehydration, loss of firmness, and discoloration, which reduces the product's commercial quality.
