We will address the main problems of a complex crop, such as blueberries

Along with the opportunities come the challenges and in the case of blueberries they are very varied, because it involves the large-scale production of a delicious but delicate fruit, which demands a lot of attention throughout the chain and requires experience to achieve proper handling. .

In the 2021/22 campaign, the Mexican blueberry industry produced more than 80.000 tons of blueberries. For the current season that ends in 2023, the production volume is expected to reach 95.802 tons, which means a growth close to 20%, although the growth of the Mexican blueberry industry does not stop and it is projected that for the 2023 campaign /24 blueberry production is 111.484 tons, which would place Mexico in the first places of the global blueberry industry.

These achievements of the industry open up multiple opportunities for Mexican producers and for the labor force that supports it, because participation in the markets is expanded, more investors arrive, new productive projects are built and the cultivation map is extended to other areas of the country, among other advantages.

Opportunities and challenges

But along with the opportunities come the challenges and in the case of blueberries they are very varied, because it involves the large-scale production of a delicious but delicate fruit, which demands a lot of attention throughout the chain and requires experience to achieve proper handling. suitable to achieve firstly a good yield and then a good quality in the fruit.

Within this framework of challenges, the entry of new genetics must be faced, with greater performance-quality qualities and adapted to the edaphoclimatic conditions of Mexico. Industry logistics must also be adjusted to ensure efficiency in all operations. Easier access to public and private financing. Manage a good commercial process and diversify markets urgently, among other tasks.

Meeting in Guadalajara

These aspects are being discussed within the Mexican industry, especially at the producer level, so each of them will be addressed in the XXVI International Blueberry Seminar what will be done this May 31 and June 01 in Guadalajara, and the important thing is that they will be approached by specialists who know the Mexican reality and recognized leaders of the local industry.

We are in a positive scenario for the international blueberry industry. A second wave of consumption is projected worldwide. There is much better and less expensive technology to implement new projects. There is a more varied genetics, with varieties suitable for almost all existing climates, soils or substrates. There are more resources to obtain a good product and, on the other hand, there is much more experience and knowledge regarding the different facets of the crop.

Complex scenario

But the business has also become more complex in many aspects. Environmental standards have been raised and high levels of sustainability are demanded. Consumer demands are also greater and there is much more competition in the market, among other challenges to consider.

In the conversation with one of the participants of the next Seminar, he answered a phrase that sums up everything that is expected from the meeting: "We will address the main problems of a complex crop, such as blueberries."
