In the 2021/22 campaign, the Mexican blueberry industry produced more than 80.000 tons of blueberries. For the current season that ends in 2023, the production volume is expected to reach 95.802 tons, which means a growth close to 20%, although the growth of the Mexican blueberry industry does not stop and it is projected that for the 2023 campaign /24 blueberry production is 111.484 tons, which would place Mexico in the first places of the global blueberry industry.

These achievements of the industry open up multiple opportunities for Mexican producers and for the labor force that supports it, because participation in the markets is expanded, more investors arrive, new productive projects are built and the cultivation map is extended to other areas of the country, among other advantages.

Opportunities and challenges

But along with the opportunities come the challenges and in the case of blueberries they are very varied, because it involves the large-scale production of a delicious but delicate fruit, which demands a lot of attention throughout the chain and requires experience to achieve proper handling. suitable to achieve firstly a good yield and then a good quality in the fruit.

Within this framework of challenges, the entry of new genetics must be faced, with greater performance-quality qualities and adapted to the edaphoclimatic conditions of Mexico.
