The blueberry meeting in Tangier will address new challenges for the berry industry

The blueberry acreage in Morocco has continued to grow in the last season with new projects and new genetics. The Moroccan blueberry industry does not abandon its goal of reaching 100.000 tons of production and extending its fruit supply to 52 weeks of the year, which demonstrates not only its consolidation, but also the will to become a protagonist in the international blueberry market. .
Berries fresh and quality
«In all of the berries Produced in Morocco, the strawberry is the one with the largest planted area, although it is the raspberries that maintain a longer season, which extends from September to July. In the case of strawberries, the campaign runs from November to June, and in the case of blackberries, the season begins in November and ends in April. The blueberry season currently begins in October and extends until June, although with the new genetics this calendar will be extended.

New challenges
«However, like the vast majority of producers in the world, Moroccans have had to face important challenges imposed by the climate, mainly regarding high temperatures, from which multiple consequences arise that harm production, not only linked to the photosynthesis, but also with respect to relative humidity and good pollination of crops.
These topics and the main agronomic aspects, such as genetic development, European market conditions, the impact of technology on crop processes, berries, characterization of substrates, nutrition and biostimulation strategies, intelligent irrigation monitoring, use of biocompounds for stress management, among others, will be addressed in the program that covers the day of the XXXIII International Berry Seminar, which will be held on September 11 in the halls of the Royal Tulip City Center Hotel in the city of Tangier.
Profitable industry
Morocco is one of the most attractive development areas in the world, due to the magnitude of its production, the quality of the fruit and the varietal sophistication of its permanent growth.
On the commercial side, Moroccan fruit is sold to various destinations in addition to Europe, such as the Middle East, Russia, Asia and even Canada, reaching average prices above its competitors.
