Michoacán, at the forefront in red fruit production

Morelia, Michoacán.- The state of Michoacán remains in the first places at the national level in the production of red fruits or berries, which are blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries.

According to the Agri-Food Panorama 2022 of the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Mexico ranked second in the value of world berry exports, which was three thousand 553 million dollars, that is, 15 percent of the total. The main export destinations were the United States, Canada and Japan.

The commercial indicators of the main exported products, corresponding to 2021, yielded the following data about red fruits.

-Blueberry. Although Jalisco generated the highest production, the best prices for the fruit were registered in Michoacán, where producers received, on average, 82 pesos per ton marketed, generating 521 million pesos for the 278 tons obtained.

Mexico was the sixth world producer, with 66 thousand 482 tons. The American fields achieved the largest harvest of this type of berries in the world. Our country exported 72 thousand 643 tons, of which the United States acquired 96.1 percent. The remaining volume was consigned to 31 markets.

The total national production volume was 66,482 tons. Jalisco got the first place, with 31 thousand 912, and Michoacán the second, with 15 thousand 490 tons.

-Raspberry. Mexico was the second world producer, with 165 thousand 677 tons. One fifth of the area in which raspberries were harvested in the world belongs to Russia, which obtained 20.3 percent of the global volume. The fruit managed to be placed in 33 international markets, the United States being the most notable with monthly purchases that averaged close to 10 tons.

The total national production volume was 165 thousand 677 tons. Jalisco obtained the first place, with 116 tons, and Michoacán the second, with 340 tons.

-Strawberry. The price in Michoacán, the main producer of the fruit, increased 9.9 percent compared to that registered in 2020, a factor that contributed to the production value increasing 8.9 percent, which refers to 6 million pesos.

Mexico was the fourth world producer, with 542 thousand 891 tons. In the world, 384 thousand 688 hectares of strawberries were cultivated, 3.4 percent of these are located in Mexican territory. This area allowed the country to harvest 639 thousand 835 tons. The growing productivity of strawberry trees in China has reached a new record, 3.3 million tons, an amount that was 2.1 times greater than that contributed by the second world producer, the United States.

The US market imported 349 tons of strawberries from Mexico, being the main buyer. Purchases from the remaining 428 destination countries accounted for only 31 percent of the volume offered.

The total national production volume was 542 thousand 891 tons. Michoacán was placed in first place, with 326 thousand 191, and Guanajuato in second, with 99 thousand 338 tons.

-Blackberry. In 2021, Michoacán decreased the production value by 48.9 percent compared to the previous year, which meant three thousand 702 million pesos less. The price per ton of strawberries was 19 thousand 658 pesos.

Mexico consolidated its leadership as the world's leading producer in the international context, its contribution was greater than a fifth of the world volume, with 211 thousand 358 tons. With an annual harvest of 124 thousand tons of blackberries, Vietnam positioned itself as the second producing nation.

Sales of Mexican blackberries covered a market of 27 countries located in America, Europe and Asia. At each latitude, the purchases of the United States, Italy and Saudi Arabia, respectively, are relevant.

The total national production volume was 211 thousand 358 tons. Michoacán achieved first place, with 196 thousand 627, and Jalisco second, with 11 thousand 238 tons.
